Interview: Barbara K. Photography
How long have you been photographing weddings for and how did you get into it?
I started photographing weddings professionally in 2013. I got into it through a friend, Kristian Leven, who’s one of the best documentary wedding photographers in the UK. I met Kris years ago on a photojournalism course. At the time I didn’t think much of wedding photography. From my experience as a guest, wedding photography was quite cheesy and boring and meant posing for endless formal group shots. It was when I saw Kristian’s work that I realised that wedding photography could be done in an artistic way, and tell a story!
What do you particularly like about photographing weddings?
It is incredible to be able to share such an intimate experience with people you hardly know! What I like the most about photographing alternative weddings is that every single wedding is different. I love telling a story of the day and my favourite thing is capturing people having fun.
How would you describe your style and approach?
My style is quirky and fun. My approach is mainly unobtrusive and relaxed so I can capture people being themselves.
What advice would you give to couples looking for a wedding photographer?
Choose a photographer you like for their style but also their approach. Some photographers create amazing portraits however if you prefer to spend your time with your guests rather than an hour posing, then they are definitely not the right choice for you.
What tips would you share with couples to help their day go more smoothly?
Just relax, take it easy, and enjoy your day no matter what! It is YOUR special day. It took ages to plan so make sure that you delegate everything on D-day.
Finally… Whats the best moment you’ve had as a wedding photographer?
I’m thrilled every time I book an exciting wedding. I like being on my way to shoot a wedding. I enjoy photographing the bride or the groom getting ready or having a drink with their mates before the ceremony. I love capturing the joy, love, laughter, fun and working with happy people. It’s great to re-live all the moving or funny moments when I’m editing. And it is so satisfying when couples tell you how happy they are with your work.
