I’m very relaxed with my shooting style. I like to stay out of the way to let the couple and their guests concentrate on having an amazing time. By blending into the background, I can move about the venue catching natural reactions, details, and moments as they happen. By capturing people and the moments this way I avoid the cheesy, cliche shots. I love to capture the joy and don’t want people to stress about how their clothes look or if their smile was posed in the right way. I also like to steal the couple for some time away from the crowd. It gives me a chance to capture the true emotions of the first moments together as a married couple. That little bit of breathing space to take it all in. Then it’s back into the fray to celebrate and capture those smiles (and maybe even a few happy tears)!

The speeches are one of my favourite moments during the wedding. Before the wedding, I often meet with the couple a few times and I know them pretty well by the time their special day arrives. However, the wedding is often the first time I meet their family. In the speeches they share so much about themselves and their family members that I feel drawn in and part of the family itself. The love in those moments just get me every time.

The best thing to do is to choose a photographer that has images in their portfolio you just love. That way you know before you even start working with that person that they will capture your wedding in a way that is meaningful and memorable to you. For example, perhaps you’ve spent months preparing the details of your wedding day and you want a photographer that cares just as much about that as you. They are out there! Take a look at their portfolios and find the moments that speak to you, that photographer will be able to work with you in a way that suits your desires for your special day. Be sure to set up a meeting with them long before the wedding day, that way you can be on the same page from the very beginning.

Another tip is don’t shop based on price! If your wedding budget is tight it’s often easier to look at the pound signs before the work/talent/ability of the photographer. Sometimes photographers may be willing to work with you, so it’s often better to research photographers that fit your style and then narrow down to what fits your budget.
