Lake District Wedding Photographer

Originally from Norfolk, I moved to the north-west to study photography at university where I successfully achieved my degree. While studying I learnt the art of being an F-stop ninja from the BBC as a photojournalist. I however quickly got bored of the 5 am phone calls and endless train journeys around the country typically photographing sad or tragic occasions. I turned to weddings after a colleague of mine asked me to photograph his wedding. I won’t lie, I was terrified but honoured and as they say, the rest is history…

I wouldn’t describe myself as a traditional wedding photographer. I don’t consult ‘The Handbook of Wedding Photography Clichés’ beforehand. I favour a more observational, creative, documentary-style approach rather than the stiff formality of endless group shots. My eyes will be peeled for those unexpected moments that can make a day. My shots are unposed, candid, spontaneous. They are moments captured rather than created and will tell the story of your big day in a naturalistic way. You’ll hardly know I’m there as I move around like an f-stop ninja clicking away like my life depends upon it. But the focus will always be on you and your guests.

On the day I’ll arrive early. I may even have visited beforehand to get the lay of the land if time permitted. And I’ll stay as late as you need me to. I’ll be nervous; not as nervous as you two, obviously, but I know it’s your special day and I want you to be happy with the shots I take. It’s a big responsibility and one I take seriously.

Even after shooting more than 150 weddings, I still get butterflies in my tummy until the first click of the shutter because I want to get things right. At some point during the day I like to spend a bit of time with you both; away from the crowds, away from distractions, to give you some breathing space and to take the opportunity for some relaxed, informal shots. Or, and, if you wish we can create some beautiful fine art couple portraits that only you will have.

I am a member of the SWPP and have full insurance coverage.

How would you describe your style?

A mix of shoot from the hip, with some fly on the wall. Plus an added dash of well-planned creative fun awesomeness... Smoke grenade or fire anyone?!

What do you love about weddings?

In short EVERYTHING! I honestly get a buzz, A joy, A warm feeling in my tummy when I'm shooting. Its a mix of my old photojournalism adrenaline rush, plus the beautiful calm and collective feeling of a landscape photograph. Most importantly though, I love delivering only my best to my amazing clients. Showing the day that they worked so hard to achieve for future generations. That's what I love.

Advice for couples planning their wedding?

Get to know your photographer and trust them. The photographer is possibly the only person to see the entire day. Half the time we end up as wedding planners and counselor gurus. Which is fine. Find a photographer you can trust and have faith in.

Look at least three full weddings in full to see the style is consistent and clear.
Mett your photographer, skype them, facetime them, ring them, email them.
Build up a relationship with them so you know each other needs and wants.
If possible do a pre-shoot to get even more comfortable with your photographer and how they work.

We were so comfortable with Joshua he became one of our witnesses!

We'd been together for over 20 years and not married because we just didn't want all the planning, politics and general fuss. Suddenly though, some planets must have aligned because we found ourselves eloping to Gretna, just the two of us and Elvis (the dog). Nobody else knew anything about it.
The plan was to have a day that truly was 'ours', doing exactly what we wanted, thinking about no one else, but it was important to capture the spirit of the day for family and friends to understand why we’d done it this way. Staged, formulaic wedding photos were never going to do that so we were really excited when we came across Joshua's website and after his enthusiastic reply to our initial enquiry email we immediately knew we’d found our man!
In the few short weeks leading up to our day we got to know Joshua through emails and phone calls. He recommended photo locations, helped look for our wedding Land Rover, got over-excited at the idea of photographing us standing on the roof of it (another story!) and generally just ‘got’ the day we wanted to have. We felt so comfortable with Joshua that we asked him to be one of our witnesses and by the time we met on the day he felt like an old friend.
Looking at them through our eyes Joshua’s photo’s absolutely capture the real story of our day, our personalities and the subtlety of all the emotions we went through, from the joy of the ceremony to the nervous phone calls telling our families what we’d done, and the moments of love that it’s so easy to overlook after being together for so many years. We have photos that capture candid split-second moments that our own memories had missed and would otherwise have been lost forever.
The happiest day of our lives has been captured, not staged – mission accomplished! Oh, and into the bargain we’ve met an incredibly talented friend.
