Beautiful Photography from Gary Moger
I’m based in Cornwall but travel all over the place shooting pictures. I grew up in London but live by the sea as I love to surf, climb and ride bicycles. Luckily my wife and two boys enjoy the same thing.
As a child, travelling with my Mum throughout Europe and America gave me the travel bug at a very young age. I began to take photographs on her old ‘Olympus Trip’ and have never looked back! When I achieved my dream of becoming a professional photographer in my mid-twenties, I was lucky enough to visit New Zealand, Africa and many other countries on location shoots. I always knew I needed to live somewhere I could see the horizon and the ocean, hence the move to Cornwall with my young family ten years ago.
I have been a professional photographer for 18 years, and was assistant and studio manager to the late, legendary Lord Patrick Lichfield. The piece of advice he gave me that I always adhere to is “Even though it is a creative process, you have to plan!”
Everybody mentions about the emotion, tears, laughter, tension, excitement and relief of the wedding day, but as a photographer you have to stay focused. I always make sure I establish trust with the bride and groom well in advance, and arrive early on the day to meet the families and guests to introduce myself before I start shooting away.
Throughout my career I have photographed everything from interiors, film sets, fashion, portraits, beauty, food and music. This gave me the experience in using all types of studio flash, continuous lighting and how to use daylight in a way that I wouldn’t have learnt in just one field. Shooting a wedding has to be one of the most rewarding and challenging genres combining documentary, fashion, beauty and portraiture. I describe my style as, ‘classic reportage with a contemporary twist’. There are three threads to the method I employ to document a wedding that enable me to capture the true spirit of the day: Number one is the documentary pictures that I shoot from start to the finish. Two is the approach I would take as if for a magazine editorial, and three is the individual portraits I take, pulling people away to have their portraits taken individually, as couples and families in a studio set-up with flash and a white background. I find the combination of these three approaches suits the ebb and flow between the formality and informality of the wedding day.
In this current age of Facebook and Instagram, where we all aspire to the idea of ‘the perfect life’, a wedding day is still the most authentic experience, filled with genuine moments of joy and emotion that should, and can be captured on film, by the right photographer.
First impressions count. Beware of fancy fake filters on photographs, because even though you want cool, current images, they should also be timeless and not look dated in the future. You don’t want them to look like old Instagram pictures or fake Poloroid transfers! Don’t focus on price in the first instance, remember you only get married once, (hopefully!), so look at your potential photographers CV and experience, and then go with your gut.
Pay for my ticket and I’ll be there!! I have shot weddings in Switzerland, London, Oxford, Devon and Cornwall. From sun soaked beaches to medieval Castles and rainy marquees.
