Gemma Willis Photography

I have been a photographer for most of my life, photography was always my calling and after completing my degree in Photography, I then went on to teach it as well. I am fascinated with creating images that tell the truth of the moment and carry some happy emotions. As well as running my own photography business shooting weddings, parties and families, I am a college lecturer, mum of two and keen baker.
My husband, Chris, often comes along as my second shooter at our wedding commissions, he has also taken responsibility for the technical side of this little business. He looks after our kit, maintains our website and continues to develop our client area, which is a fantastic way of showcasing your images to your friends and family. They can also buy prints online too.
On occasions where Chris can’t make it, we often bring along Caitlin as our second shooter. I have known and worked with Caitlin for many years and we have a great rapport and compliment each other so well. Caitlin is what we describe as a bit of a photography ninja. She has an amazing ability to blend into the background and capture moments unnoticed, which gives her images a wonderfully natural feel.
Something that we all share is a love for meeting new people, and making people happy. Wedding photography gives us the chance to do both of these, meeting wonderful couples and their guests, and hopefully providing a bit of happiness through our photography.

How would you describe your style?

We describe our style as creative and documentary. What that means is we don’t just want to provide you with amazing images. We want you look over the photography from your wedding day and be transported back to it. We want to capture the combination of things that made your day special to you. Gemma undertakes every wedding we are commissioned for. She will be there to capture all of the usual wedding bits – walking down the aisle, the vows, the speeches, cutting the cake – but also the moments that you don’t always get to see and might otherwise pass un-noticed. The bride and bridesmaids getting ready, the groom and groomsmen gathering before the ceremony, and the guests just generally enjoying the day. In order to achieve our aims it’s vital that we get to know you a little, which is why Gemma conducts a face to face consultation as part of every package. This is where you can sit down over a cup of tea (or wine if you prefer!) and really talk about your plans for the day, what you like and what you don’t like. It’s good to start our relationship early, the more time we’ve had to get to know each other, the more relaxed you will be in front of the camera on the big day. We find that relaxed couples photograph much better, our best work always comes from those couples that we share a great relationship with. A great way to help with that process is a pre-wedding engagement shoot. This is a great opportunity for us to meet and spend time together before the day, as well have a bit of fun with the camera and the locations for the shoot. Gemma and a second photographer (usually Chris) will be with you all day, from preparations to the first dance to capture everything they can. With the aim of providing you with an honest and meaningful record of your day that is also a work of art in it’s own right.

What do you love about weddings?

Everything. I am a sucker for a good wedding and I'm usually the first to choke up when I see the Groom's face as the Bride enters the room (and I get front row seats for that one!). It is such a wonderful happy event and everyone I work with is so lovely and welcoming. I also love re-telling the story and hearing the feedback from my couples and their families.

What advice would you give to couples looking for their perfect wedding photographer?

I would meet your photographer, I feel that this is an important part of choosing who to have record your day. Make sure you get a good feel for who they are, do you feel comfortable around them. Especially if you want the more natural shots. If you feel comfortable and at ease around your photographer, the natural reportage shots will come easily and in abundance.
