Today on our blog we have a fun and cute couple, Katie and Spencer who had a lovely engagement shoot captured by Bristol based wedding photographer Natalie Martin Photography.

Please tell us a little bit about the day and how it went
When I met up with the gorgeous Katie and Spencer at their wedding venue, Tracy Park, it was pouring with rain. (We felt slightly put out since it was July and there had been a heatwave that week!). However, armed with brollies we went to seek out a secluded spot and I saw an archway in a wall with wildflowers inside and asked if we could investigate. As we walked through the archway we found a completely private, walled ‘secret’ garden, full of long grass and wild flowers – it was just stunning. As we trundled into the centre (with poor Katie in sandals trying to avoid the nettles!) the rain stopped and the sun burst through…it felt very much like this was meant to be! From that point on everything just went beautifully.

Do tell us about the couple
Katie and Spencer are one of those couples that everybody falls in love with. They are such decent, caring, kind people, right to the core. They love each other SO much, but in a really genuine way, a deep, respectful way. Katie in particular is a very special person, I can’t imagine her saying a bad thing about anyone, she has such a good heart, and this was evident from every speech on their wedding day – everyone loves her, and rightly so. I really care about all my couples and I just know that these two are going to be so happy because they are happy, caring people – what you give out comes back to you, its true!

What did you love about the day?
I loved all of this shoot! I loved getting to spend more time getting to know Katie and Spencer and how we found our little secret garden and that they shared some very genuine moments with me and my little camera which hopefully they will treasure for years to come.
What I didn’t love was getting back to my car feeling all euphoric and finding my battery was flat….peaks and troughs eh!

Do tell us a little bit about yourself
I’m Natalie, a wedding photographer living in Bristol but covering the South West and Wales. As I’m sure many wedding photographers will agree, I have one of the best jobs in the world. I basically get to spend lots of time with people in love on the most in-love day of their lives, taking photos of them that they will hopefully also fall in love with! It is such a privilege to be there capturing one of the most significant days of a couples life, and I do truly feel honoured to be the one to record all those beautiful moments. When I’m not photographing weddings and working on other photography projects I have another full time job of ‘Mummy’ to my amazing 1 year old daughter, Ella and wife to my best friend and husband Tom.

How would you describe your photography style?
This is always a tricky question as there are so many influences that affect how I work – overall my wedding photography is reportage, in that I don’t tend to ask people to look at the camera or ‘pose’, I photograph the true story of the day through the lens, trying to stay as unobtrusive as possible. However, I do also feel that connection is very important, I would never feel like I was doing the best job on the day if I was turning up and politely introducing myself and then hiding in the shadows, as I wouldn’t have that relationship and trust with the bride and groom to be able to get close enough to certain moments. That’s why the pre-wedding shoots are so important to the way I work, because they really allow us to all spend time together and we get to know each other so on the day it’s more of a warm ‘oh hiya!’ when I arrive rather than ‘oh hello you must be the photographer…’. I’ve recently qualified as a Certified Beloved Photographer, a relatively new genre of photography that really focusing on connections with your subjects to create the most natural, authentic photographs and it is amazing how much of a difference it is already making.

Many thanks for Natalie for sharing this with us, you can find out more about her and her work on her profile page here, where you can also get in touch about your perfect wedding day.
