Colwick Hall Hotel Wedding

We feature the wedding of Stuart & Anna that took place at Colwick Hall Hotel and was captured by Matt Selby Photography.

The couple:

I first met Stuart & Anna at their home last year to discuss their wedding plans. It soon became apparent Stuart & Anna were a couple I’d love to work with. Not only are they a cool, easy going couple, but their wedding sounded great with the style and colour scheme.

The venue (Colwick Hall Hotel) was one on my to-do list having never captured a wedding there before, a stunning venue with loads of photographic potential. It was also where I got married back in 2014.

Anna & Stuart also had an engagement session so by the time they tied the knot we all felt really comfortable around each other and that helped to settle any nerves on the day. I think its clear to see in the images just how comfortable they both were on the day and how this comes through in the photographs!

Please tell us a little bit about the day and how it went:

The weather was great on the day of the wedding, with blue skies and white wispy clouds. I was particularly excited about shooting the bridal preparation was in the Byron suit which resulted in a great batch of morning shots.

Anna and her bridesmaids all looked great in their LouLou dresses, which swirl ever so well! so the bridesmaids shots had to feature plenty of dress swirls! Stuart in his Hugo Boss suit looked the bee’s knees! Alongside the morning preparation shots I was keen to capture a groom shot of Stuart to show his style & confidence.

Speeches are always a part of the day I enjoy photographing, you can have a mix of emotions and often something unexpected. I think this was the first wedding I’ve ever had the privilege of photographing a bridesmaids speech, rapped out to Will Smith’s Fresh Prince of Bel-Air!
The bride and groom shots took place in the grounds to the rear as well as the mirrored corridor and into the female toilets!

The evening had a huge buffet, a fun cake cut and a great first dance, hats off to Stuart for giving his wife a twirl! There was also a great dance floor and some particularly cool moves from the father of the bride!

About the Photographer

Website: www.mattselbyphotography.co.uk

I’m a Nottingham wedding photographer who loves to capture weddings and portraits. I’m also a Google Photographer and can be seen capturing 360 virtual tours of businesses across the UK.

I’m married to my wife Bex and have recently had our first baby daughter Florence. I also broke my ankle a week before the due date so the last 6 weeks have been interesting!

How would you describe your photography style?

My style is a blend of unobtrusive documentary photography (where the couple don’t even know I’m there), with subtle elements of fashion, (where I love to capture the bride and groom, often using portable lighting systems)

I’m not a fan of cliché or traditional posed shots, I aim for quality over quantity and strive to deliver the best images possible. I love working with reflections and particularly like a moody sky!

What did you love about the day?

  • Orange and blue colour scheme
  • Stuarts Boss suit
  • Working in the Byron suite
  • The clean ambient light during the ceremony
  • Shooting the bridesmaids shots with a 1200W flash
  • The bridesmaids speech/rap
  • The twirl of the bride during 1st dance

What advice would you give to couples planning their wedding day?

My advice:

  • Be sure to check out plenty of suppliers and ask lots of questions.
  • Don’t shop solely on price
  • Choose a venue that ticks the most boxes
  • Consider the day or the week and time of the year
  • Set a budget, but don’t be afraid to go over budget
  • Consider setting up a website for the planning

Stuart & Anna’s advice:

Enjoy the planning and the day itself and make time for each other during the day as that’s what it’s all about.
